October 2000 Index
Date: 18-Oct-2000 Poet: Yahya Jasdanwala I received a number of requests to provide the lyrics of the other ghazals in the Begum Akhtar album that I mentioned in my earlier posts. So this week's remaining posts will feature the three remaining ghazals. Like I mentioned earlier, all the ghazals in this album ("Malika-e-Gazal Begum Akhtar in Mehfil") have been penned by Yahya Jasdanwala. It is a live recording but apart from a few comments that Begum Akhtar makes during the course of the ghazals, you wouldn't know it to be so. I love Begum Akhtar's style, her voice, her 'gaayaki'. For me, she is indeed "Malika-e-Ghazal". I wish there were more of her ghazal albums. The album has five ghazals: 1. jahaa.N ban ban ke aas dil kii TuuTiijaatii hai 2. josh par phir hai tabiyat tere diivaano.n kii 3. dil kii lagii ko aur vo bha.Dakaa rahe hai.n aaj 4. jaan-e-sukuun aa bhii jaa teraa hii intazaar hai 5. ek bekasii hai hijr ke maaro.n ke saath saath Of these, I have already posted #2 and #5 Here is ghazal #1 from the album: jahaa.N ban ban ke aas dil kii TuuTii jaatii hai vahii.n qismat kha.Dii bechaaragii pe muskuraatii hai [bechaaragii = helplessness] Gam-e-ulfat ke haatho.n jo miTaa be-aasaraa ho kar usii paamaal-e-Gam ko haaye ab duniyaa sataatii hai [be-aasaraa = without hope; paamaal = downtrodden] [paamaal-e-Gam = ] kahaa.N rahataa hai qaabuu phir dil-e-naakaam par mujh ko ke jab rah rah ke tanahaa_ii me.n terii yaad aatii hai [qaabuu = control] ??? muntazar to huu.N vafuur-e-shauq me.n "Yahya" magar ab dekhiye un kii tajallii kyaa dikhaatii hai [muntazar = waiting; vafuur = abundance; tajallii = manifestation] ** ??? is not a riddle. :-) I couldn't make out the word from the recording and I would really appreciate it if someone who has heard this ghazal and knows what the word is/should be, provides me with some hints ** -------------------------------------------------- Mehfil-e-Gazal Archive: http://www.geocities.com/urdu_poetry/meg/ To subscribe: send an e-mail to urdu_poetry-subscribe@eGroups.com To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to urdu_poetry-unsubscribe@eGroups.com For all other queries, send an e-mail to moderator@urdupoetry.com --------------------------------------------------
