Dear friends,

It feels great to be back! Thank you so much for your patience 
and for staying with Mehfil-e-Gazal, despite the unintentionally 
long break. I am happy to report that I have finally settled in. 
For those who have joined us in the past few weeks, the reason 
for the long silence on Mehfil-e-Gazal was that I was moving to 
San Diego with a new job. Add to that a house full of stuff and 
a seven month old baby, and you will perhaps understand why it 
took me so long to get back into the groove.

I would like to thank all MeG subcribers residing in the San 
Diego area for their warm welcome.

Let's start off with some good news. The Mehfil-e-Gazal website 
has been redesigned. Take a peek at

While the mailing list webiste will remain on Geocities, I am 
planning on moving the Urdu poetry archive to a new home. So, 
if you have it bookmarked (which I hope most of you do), please 
update your link so that it points to http://www.urdupoetry.com 
instead of the Geocities address.

On to today's poem which is a nazm by Saifuddin Saif. One of 
the lines (marked with a **) is unclear. Can someone provide the 
missing words or perhaps take an educated guess as to what 
they can be? :-)


jab tere shahar se guzarataa huu.N

kis tarah rokataa huu.N ashko.n ko
kis tarah dil pe jabar karataa huu.N
aaj bhii kaarazaa-e-hastii me.n

jab tere shahar se guzarataa huu.N

kis mohalle me.n hai makaa.N teraa
kaun sii shaaKh-e-gul pe raqsaa.N hai
rashk-e-firdaus aashiyaa.N teraa

Girat-e-husn kaaravaa.N teraa
kis se puuchhuu.Ngaa mai.n Khabar terii
kaun batalaayegaa nishaa.N teraa
