ye dil kabhii na muhabbat me.n kaamayaab huaa
mujhe Kharaab kiyaa, aap bhii Kharaab huaa

ajal me.n, ziist me.n turabat me.n, hashr me.n zaalim
tere sitam ke liye mai.n hii intaKhaab huaa

[ajal = death; ziist = life; turabat = grave; hashr = day of judgement; intaKhaab = selected]

nigaah-e-mast ko saaqii kii kaun de ilzaam
meraa nasiib ki rusavaa meraa shabaab huaa

[shabaab = youth (this is one of those words for which no word in English seems adequate)]

hamaare ishq kii das-biis ne bhii daad na dii
kisii kaa husn zamaane me.n intaKhaab huaa

fanaa kaa daavaa hazaaro.n ko thaa zamaane me.n
habaab ne mujhe dekhaa to aab-aab huaa

[habaab(hubaab) = bubble; aab = water]


Bekhud Dehlvi was born Haji Syed Wahiduddin Ahmed. Born in Bharatpur, Bekhud was a protege of Daag Dehlvi. His compilations include Guftar-e-Bekhud and Shahsavar-e-Bekhud. Bekhud Dehlvi passed away on 2nd October 1955 in Delhi at the age of 72.
