Poet: Moin Ahsan Jazbi
Moin Ahsan Jazbi kii ek Gazal pesh-e-Khidmat hai. Jazbi
saahab kaa janm Azamgadh shahar me.n 21 August, 1912
me.n huyaa thaa. Aap 'Fani' Badayuni ke shaagird the.
Moin Ahsan Jazbi's most popular Gazal was "marane kii
duaae.n kyuu.N maa.Nguu.N jiine kii tamaannaa kaun
kare" which has been rendered by Habib Wali Mohammed
in his characteristic style, and is a delight to hear. It is
available in the archive at
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/6631/jazbi01.html
Incidentally, the above mentioned Gazal is officially Kishore
Kumar's first film song. This was in an old Hindi film called
Ziddi (not the Joy Mukherjee-Asha Parekh starrer).
Here is today's Gazal:
ham dahar ke is viiraane me.n jo kuchh bhii nazaaraa karate hai.n
ashko.n kii zabaa.Nme.n kahate hai.n aaho.n se ishaaraa karate hai.n
[dahar = world]
ai mauj-e-balaa, unako bhii zaraa do-chaar thape.De halke se
kuchh log abhii tak saahil se tuufaa.N kaa nazaaraa karate hai.n
[mauj = wave; balaa = calamity; saahil = river-side]
** Perhaps one of the rare instances a lover explicitly asks
for something bad to happen to his 'mehboob', even though
the poet has tried o soften it by qualifying the 'thape.De' with
'halke se'**
kyaa jaaniye kab ye paap kaTe kyaa jaaniye vo din kab aaye
jis din ke liye is duniyaa me.n kyaa kuchh na gavaaraa karate hai.n
[gavaaraa = to bear/tolerate]
kyaa tujhako pataa kyaa tujhako Khabar din raat Khayaalo.n me.n apane
ai kaakul-e-getii ham tujahko din-raat sa.Nvaaraa karate hai.n
[kaakul = hair plait; getii = world]
This is all I have of this particular Gazal. I would be obliged if
someone could complete it. I will end with a sher by Jazbi:
ai husn! ham ko hijr kii raato.n kaa Khauf kyaa
teraa Khayaal jaagegaa, soyaa kare.nge ham
[hijr = separation; Khauf = fear]

I would like to thank everyone who sent e-mails inquiring
