Ashaar #028 - 'shaadii'

    Date: 23-Dec-2000
    Topic: 'shaadii'

    I had no idea there was such a dearth of ashaar on 'shaadii'.
    I suppose the reason is that most marriage related poetry
    falls under another type of Urdu poetry called 'sehraa'. This
    is a song/poem praising the groom/bride and their relatives.

    Anyhow, since I myself did not come across any ashaar on 'shaadii'
    :-( let me expand on the theme. The root word for 'shaadii' is
    'shaad' which means joy or happiness. As such here are a few ashaar
    on 'shaadii' not necessarily meaning marriage.

    shaadii me.n kuchh Gam ke pahaluu nikal aate hai.n
    besaaKhtaa ha.Nsane me.n aa.Nsuu nikal aate hai.n
    [Saqib]

    [besaaKhtaa = suddenly]

    ye roz-marraa ke kuchh vaaqe_aat-e-shaadii va Gam
    mere Khudaa yahii insaan kii zindagaanii hai
    [Abdul Hameed Adam]

    [roz-marraa = daily; vaaqe_aat = incidents]

    baham ik muKhtasar se dil me.n hai shaadii va Gam dono.n
    ye chhoTaa saa makaa.N aur is me.n dozaKh bhii hai jannat bhii
    [Unknown]

    [baham = together; muKhtasar = small; dozaKh = hell; jannat = heaven]

    Sahir being Sahir, manages to impart a sad tinge to a happy
    event like 'shaadii' declaring it to be the end of love. In
    his nazm titled 'Khaanaa_aabaadii', recited at his friend's
    wedding, he starts off on a happy note:

    taraane guu.Nj uTThe hai.n fazaa me.n shaadiyaano.n ke
    havaa hai itr_aagii.n zarraa zarraa muskuraataa hai

    [itr_aagii.n = fragrant]

    The nazm ends with:

    ye shaadii Khaanaa_aabaadii ho mere mohatarim bhaa_ii
    mubaarak kah nahii.n sakataa meraa dil kaa.Np jaataa hai

    [mohatarim = dear]

    Well, that's all I have on 'shaadii'. The next topic is 'Eid'
    which is just around the corner. It will also be the last post
    of Ashaar in December. Please send in your contribution by 27th
    December. I shall be on leave in January and there will be no
    posts in the month of January. Posts will resume in February.
